Apple Recall 2011 iMacs with 1TB Seagate Drives - Check Your New Computers

Quote from Apple Support page:

"Apple has determined that a very small number of Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems, may fail under certain conditions. These systems were sold between May 2011 and July 2011."

This has been written up in a number of different places. If anyone needs assistance determining if your new machine is at risk, please feel free to use that MyGeekShopper Live Support icon. If we are off-line, send a note and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. We will just ask you to register with us first.

There is a support page at Apple where you can put your serial number in to check if the drive is suspect.

I read the page and if I am reading right, they are going to install the a new drive and then it will be up to you to get your programs and data back, so you will need to back-up. That is really raw if you ask me.

My suggestion is to go back to the Apple store where you bought it and if they tell you they cannot backup and recover your data for you, I would throw a proverbial tantrum to end all tantrums. Actually, I would just keep saying, "See, that's not acceptable, may I speak to your manager?" Then when I got as high as I can go at the store, if they still say, you need to get your data restored yourself, then the tatrum... Good and noise folks. There is usually quite a din in Apple Stores.

If that doesn't do any good, before they have you arrested (this is a fine art), get a price from them to backup and restore your machine and let us try to meet or beat it.

In the meantime, if you have a backup procedure, be sure to use it often.
